The Advanced Science & Engineering Operation provides the scientific, engineering and operational support for the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Center for Earth Resources Observation & Science (EROS). JOB DESCRIPTION: The Landsat Data Continuity Contract (LDCC) project, in support of the USGS Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center, Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM), has a position open for a Systems Engineer (SE) to provide full life-cycle systems engineering to its Data Processing and Archive System (DPAS) development team. The DPAS development team is responsible for the image processing of LDCM satellite data into earth science products, for the USGS. This processing involves radiometric and geometric corrections for data from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) instrument. In addition, the DPAS is responsible for metadata development, data and product inventory, and Calibration/Validation processing support. The DPAS SE will support SE activities including requirements development and management, operational concept and design formulation, preliminary and critical design preparation and reviews, integration and test planning and procedure creation, software team resource and time estimation, system modeling and analysis, and hardware estimation and procurement. The DPAS SE reports to the LDCC Systems Engineering Manager. REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: BS in Engineering or related technical discipline and a minimum of 6 years related experience, 5 years with Masters, 4 years with PhD. REQUIRED SKILLS: - Understanding of systems development lifecycle and systems engineering role throughout lifecycle. - Knowledge of systems engineering competencies, which should include some or all of the following: concepts and architecture formulation, system design, integration, verification, validation, technical planning and estimating, configuration management, risk management, system procurement and deployment. - Experience supporting development design reviews, providing briefings to a variety of audiences, and conducting technical meetings. - Experience authoring technical documents. - Ability to work well individually as well as with large and small teams - Excellent organizational skills with a proven ability to manage multiple efforts simultaneously - Excellent interpersonal and analytical skills - Familiarity with MS Office applications DESIRED SKILLS: Knowledge of or experience with government remote sensing programs and/or satellite ground system (ground station, archive, image processing) experience. Experience working with large systems engineering teams. Experience performing hardware planning and procurement.
